'A surreal moment': Dad's reaction during gender reveal leaves whole restaurant startled

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: A California couple were completely taken aback after what they believed would be an obvious gender reveal turned out to be a bit of a surprise.

When Patrick and McKenna Hartmann, who already have a daughter named Maverick, found out the second child they were expecting was a boy, the husband couldn't control his excitement. 

Gender reveal draws attention at local restaurant

The two decided to have a simple sex reveal at a local restaurant, cutting into a cake to find out if they were expecting a boy or a girl. McKenna explained in her Instagram post and TikTok sharing the now-viral video that it was a moment "we'll never forget!"

Speaking about the viral moment, Patrick said, "The reaction just came naturally. I feel like I need a boy to be able to keep up with our little girl Maverick!"

When the two cut into the cake and discovered blue frosting, Patrick erupted into a yell that caught the attention of the entire restaurant. In the video, as a mortified McKenna tries to reel him in, he stands up and even bangs on the table.

McKenna describes 'surreal' moment

McKenna said, "When we cut into that cake and saw blue, it was such a surreal moment. I was just in pure shock and so incredibly happy at the same time!"

"What you can't see in the video is that when Patrick hits the table, it actually made a wine glass pop up and break at the stem, spilling wine all over my dad! So when you see me in the video trying to reign him in, that's what just happened!" she told People.

According to McKenna, in addition to the fact that they were already raising a girl, girls were also prevalent in each of their birth families.

She explained on Instagram, "We never imagined we'd have a boy with nothing but girls on both sides of our family. I have two sisters, he has three sisters, and our first child is a girl, so we didn't have high hopes for any boys, to be honest.."

She shared, "The whole restaurant was very confused and concerned until Patrick announced that it was a boy, and everyone started applauding. It's something I'll never forget."

Explaining the moment from her perspective, McKenna wrote on Instagram at the time, "Backstory on this POV… We didn’t find out what we were having when I was pregnant with our first. Patrick swore it was a boy and called her a 'he' up until the literal moment our daughter was born!"

She noted in the caption, "After that, he lost the little hope he had for a boy in our family! Until this day." 

McKenna added, "Going into the gender reveal, I had this little thought in the back of my head that if it somehow was a boy, that it was going to be a disaster because I knew how excited Patrick would be." The couple's baby boy is expected to arrive in January, much to the delight of his big sister Maverick.
