Beloved NFL reporter Erin Andrews was called 'too old' for her job — but she handled it like a total pro

Erin Andrews started her career in the sports industry two decades ago, but trolls are still not convinced that she is here to stay.

This is an arguably favorable time for women in the sports industry. But it was not the same just a few years ago. Pioneers like Erin Andrews (@ErinAndrews), one of the most notable sideline reporters and sportscasters, have paved the way for the future generation of women to follow her lead. Expectedly, she was not immune to the endless barrage of harassment and sexism in the early years of her professional career. From being called a “Sideline Barbie” to receiving brutal remarks from fans, athletes, and colleagues, the 46-year-old TV personality has endured it all. While reacting to the constant hate and criticism can be challenging, Andrews smartly identifies who gets called out.

In December 2024, Andrews faced the usual sexist remark about her aging appearance. A troll on X (@MikefromManhat1) pointed out her wrinkles, stating that they were visible from their TV and hence, the sportscaster should retire, clearing the way for a younger woman to step in. “Erin Andrews is too old now. Can visibly see the wrinkles on the HD. It’s been a great run for Erin, but it’s time for a younger blonde/brunette to take over,” the questionable post read. Just like that, the X user canceled years of hard work Andrews put into her career and opined that she should retire simply because she looked old. Speak of double standards. People on the internet chastised the snarky remark, but Andrews decided it was time to state the obvious.

“Don’t even think you need HD to see them. But appreciating you pointing them out, bud!” the sports commentator wrote, replying to his post. The post went viral, viewed over 1.3 million times, and was backed by thousands of internet users bashing the troll. “What the hell is wrong with people? Erin is smart, articulate, and beautiful.  One of the best in all of sports,” wrote New Zealand cricketer Troy Johnson (@nutseller). Another person (@johnnyfish69) revealed a few other names, stating, “So does Terry Bradshaw. Howie has a few. Troy Aikman. Chris Collinsworth. Etc…”

“I still watch and listen to your insights and information. You’re doing a great job. This person is just too shallow to see your greatness,” marked someone else (@tylersdad07). User @Feebeekiwi mocked, “The idiots you have to put up with, Erin.” A fellow X user (@jkeller3737) made a Bambi reference, and said, “I just got an Erin Andrews Cardinals women’s jacket for my wife. My mom used to say, 'If you don’t have something nice to say. Don’t say it.'”

However, this is not the first time Andrews has resorted to sarcasm to respond to the criticism. It’s not always as harsh, though. Earlier, she cleverly downplayed her glowing look while working on the ground by admitting that it was sweat. One user (@boogiebound) shared a photo of Andrews interviewing an athlete and captioned, “@ErinAndrews out here with a glow.” She replied, “It’s full-blown sweat. In need of a shower.” The TV star did not hesitate and impressed many on the internet with her unabashed persona. But the sexist remarks barely seem to stop. She openly addresses them in her Calm Down podcast with co-host Charissa Thompson, Fox Sports and Amazon Prime football host.
