Dog in Florida accidentally puts car in reverse, spends an hour driving in circles before cops help out

Dogs are one of the smartest creatures on this planet. They understand humans, even copy them sometimes, and know how to communicate with people. They surprise people with their kindness all the time, but sometimes they do things that are unfathomable.

A dog in Florida recently wowed residents of Port St. Lucie when it went on a "joyride" in a car all by itself for an hour. Police had to intervene to get the black Labrador Retriever named Max out of the car when they were called. He accidentally put his owner's parked car in reverse and it went around in circles for an hour, according to a statement released by the Port St. Lucie Police Department.

The residents of the area initially did not realize that only a dog was inside the 2003 Mercury Sable spinning around their cul-de-sac, according to People. They had a good laugh at the interesting turn of events that morning.

"First I thought I saw somebody backing up, but then they kept going and I’m like, ‘Okay, what are they doing?'" Anne Sabol, a local resident, told WPBF. "The cops came, and I’m like ‘Okay.'"

The police said that the owner had made a wrong turn onto S.E. Edith Court and stopped there. He got out of the car and shut the door with his dog inside. Max accidentally moved the shifter into reverse and it went into circles. The owner got locked out of the car and while he had an extra fob (key remote), it was inoperable because of low battery. The car hit a mailbox, a few garbage cans, and bricks that were in front of the houses and slowed. The police were able to approach the car when it slowed and entered the code on the keypad outside the driver's side door.

The resident said that the St. Lucie Fire Rescue also arrived on scene. "I figured 'how the heck did they manage to do that?' Then I saw another cop car and another cop car," she told WPTV.

"I saw this car going around in a circle and it was doing it for about an hour. And when the cops got the door open, a black dog jumped out, I was like, 'They should give that thing a license,'" Sabol told WPBF. "He was a better driver than a lot of them I've seen... He was doing pretty good until he hit the mailbox. He went around for about an hour without hitting anything at all," she told WPTV.

Nobody was injured and the car sustained some minor damage when it hit a mailbox, the police statement said. The police also said that the dog was "fine, healthy and happy" once he got out of the vehicle. The driver has promised to replace the damaged mailbox, according to WPBF.
