In addition to posting a picture of her adorable grandchild—her daughter, Chelsea's son—Lisa Hough also revealed the unbearably difficult choice that her daughter had to make. She said that her grandson Karson was born with a number of medical issues.

Hough wrote in a Facebook post, "The only way to describe what has happened is that this beautiful baby boy has suffered two very rare traumatic conditions that are completely unrelated to one another." She continued by saying that her newborn grandson had experienced a "hemorrhage in the left temporal lobe" and had been identified as having the uncommon inherited metabolic disease, non-ketotic hyperglycinemia (NKH).

Non-ketotic hyperglycinemia is "a disorder characterized by abnormally high levels of a molecule called glycine in the body (hyperglycinemia). The excess glycine builds up in tissues and organs, particularly the brain. Affected individuals have serious neurological problems," per Medline Plus.

Hough further wrote, "His case is presented as severe and would cause him to be severely neurologically impaired – functioning at a 2-3-month-old level at best for his lifetime." Given all the facts from the medical professionals, his mother took the extraordinarily difficult choice to remove Karson from life support, reports Love This Pic.

Hough wrote in an update on Facebook, "While we weren’t ready to say goodbye to Karson, we had come to terms with the inevitable. We were given 10 minutes after withdrawing intensive care and the ventilator and told he would not breath on his own and to expect his heart to stop within those 10 minutes." She added, "At 3:00 PM today, he was removed from care. Well God and Karson had other plans!"

As soon as the ventilator was removed and his heart rate and oxygen levels were normalized, he began breathing on his own. "Here we are 5 hours later with this miracle baby that we were told would never breath, swallow, have gag reflexes, or even survive. He is breathing unassisted," Lough wrote in her post.

She said that his doctors could not explain what had happened, claiming that there was no evidence from medicine or science to justify the survival of this tiny fighter; the only explanation they has was that a miracle occurred. "I’m not sure why I ever thought we were so underserving of a miracle.. and I’m not sure how long we have with him, but we have him now. And now we will take," Lough wrote.

The family has been posting regular updates about Karson's health on a separate Facebook Page. Hough even started a GoFundMe campaign for Karson and his mother to get through the tough times.
