FedEx driver has a scary warning for pet owners who order Chewy products: "It's dog food with..."
E-commerce has increased access to a wider variety of products along with the convenience of shopping from home, but it also creates a scenario where quality might not be up to the mark. The flip side of the ease of online shopping is that buyers cannot always inspect the quality of the products before making a purchase. One such incident was highlighted by TikTok user Jennifer Monique, who voiced concerns about the company Chewy and claimed that some of their products for pets included lead, which is a hazardous substance.
"FedEx needs to go on and print Chewy on the side of its vans because that seems to be all they’re delivering nowadays," Monique said in the video clip. While she expressed concern about the weight of the products, the heavy boxes weren't her only issue. “It’s motherf*ckin dog food with lead in it,” she said in her video, as a warning. It seems her concerns about pets being exposed to lead in Chewy's products were no joke. A class action lawsuit filed in July last year accused the retailer of selling four products allegedly containing cancer-causing chemicals, as reported by Market Realist.
The lawsuit also claims that Chewy doesn't provide adequate warnings or labels to inform customers about the potential risks related to these items. Even though a settlement is still pending, the company has not addressed the allegations or released any information regarding the lawsuit. Children, adults, and pets are all at serious risk from exposure to lead. As reported by the Daily Dot, it can happen by ingestion, inhalation, or direct contact and increase the risk of diseases including high blood pressure and kidney damage in adults. Lead exposure can also cause behavioral issues, learning disabilities, and developmental delays in children.

In pets, such as canines, lead exposure can cause a range of health problems, including anemia, digestive issues, fatigue, loss of appetite, and even changes in behavior and neurological function. Internet users flooded the comment section of the viral TikTok video to voice their concerns about the heavy weight of Chewy packages, agreeing with Monique’s complaints. A user @jwes585, commented, "I ordered 3 cat litters and they put it all in one box! 📦 I felt bad and never did it again! It was like a box of bricks!" Another person @kelly added, "The way I specifically leave out snacks and water when I know I have a Chewy order coming."
In 2023, Chewy and eight other companies were charged by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) with violating federal law by selling unapproved animal antibiotics. Tracey Forfa, the FDA veterinary medicine director said, “Inappropriate use of medically important antimicrobials contributes to the development of antimicrobial resistance, which affects both human and animal health." The FDA claimed that the retailers sold unauthorized medication containing penicillin and amoxicillin, which could contribute to the rise of drug-resistant superbugs. These unapproved products were specifically intended for use on birds and fish, according to a letter sent to the companies, as reported by The Hill.
