Videos of alleged UFO sightings and supernatural activities have long taken the internet by storm. But the latest of the internet frenzies, is actually a massive mysterious doorway that netizens spotted on Google Maps in Antarctica. On Reddit, an individual who goes by u/realg00n sparked widespread discussion when they shared an uncanny picture from the icy continent.

As per the post, the picture was captured on February 20, 2024, and highlighted the street view of a region—coordinates 69°00’50″S 39°36’22″E. It featured a massive, door-like structure which some argued was an 'underground base entrance.' Meanwhile, others speculated that it was an 'orb casting a shadow.'

A person penned, "Just scanned the area real quick [on Google Maps], but check this one out, and it's not far from yours. 69.02541449015376, 39.539733123240936 looks like an orb casting a shadow. It's pretty big as well, nearly 20 ft tall and 15 ft wide using the measuring tool." Participating in the discussion, another wrote, "Pretty sure that’s just a sheer ice formation formed from the snow getting blown over and over, acting like a sand blaster due to the high wind speeds. It doesn’t even look like a door." Meanwhile, a Redditor opined, "Never have I seen an ice cave that had a perfect rectangle entrance. It looks a little too remote to still be in use. Could be one of those old Nazi bases."

Another argued, "I consider the photo of the post to be taken out of the general landscape. There are similar objects around the mysterious object. I think these are ice chunks and not a door." An equally astute onlooker shared, "It’s an iceberg trapped in some sea ice. Not only is it floating on water (some door that would be), but there's a puddle on it. Zoom out, and you'll see lots of icebergs." On a lighter note, one quipped, "Santa changed his location and was found again. I guess his wife, the elves, reindeer, and everything else will be looking for a new place once again."

Interestingly, a person claimed to have witnessed something similar. They shared, "Flying from New York to Hawaii... with a stopover in LA, I am positive I saw a door similar to this—from the plane. It was somewhere in Colorado or Arizona. And many years ago, before cell phones were readily available. Sorta shook me up when I saw it. I still think about it all the time. Tried Google Maps search but could never find it." A comment also read, "I do agree it could look like ice, but it also looks like the snow in front of it was moved. If you look at the left side of the door/ice, it appears that the snow arcs from the base to the top of the door/ice."

But as it turns out, there might be quite a reasonable explanation for it. As per LADbible, Professor Bethan Davies, Professor of Glaciology at the University of Newcastle, explained, "This feature is in an area of fast sea ice in East Antarctica, just offshore of the coast. There are a series of islands there and the water is pretty shallow. This is an iceberg that became grounded and is now stuck and melting out in situ." Her claim was backed by co-director of the Grantham Institute, Professor Martin Siegert, who asserted, "This is simply ice flow around a solid subglacial obstacle, influenced also by melting and re-freezing of ice and by katabatic winds. The ice is quite thin here...so the influence of the bed on ice flow will be strong. It's an interesting pattern, but not unusual."
