It has been widely believed that dogs value connections and loyalty much more than humans usually do.

Dogs are known to be the protectors of human beings who later evolved into adorable furry companions and loyal friends. Some dogs are more cuddly, happy to stay by their human companion's side and snuggle all day. Others are more spirited and playful, always seeking attention and ready to give theirs in return. There are countless stories of dogs faithfully waiting for their owners, even when they never come back. One such heartbreaking tale comes from a beach in Peru, where a dog is said to wait every day for his owner, a fisherman who died years ago.

While out for a walk on the beach with her family, a woman, Jolie Mejía, spotted a dog named Vaguito in the Lima coastal area of Punta Negra. At first, she thought Vaguito had been left behind, as he still wore his collar. She sat with him to give him company until his owner came back to fetch him. She said, "He didn't seem abandoned, he was clean, so I petted him waiting for its owner, but minutes passed and no one came." When Mejía approached the dog, he seemed friendly but kept his distance. He appeared sad and lonely, yet he seemed in good health. After a while, a local from Punta Negra came over and shared the heartbreaking story of Vaguito’s past.

Mejía said, "He told us that the animal lived with a fisherman who passed away a long time ago. And that, since then, the dog comes here every day and looks at the sea." The woman also revealed that Vaguito was adopted by a kind resident after his owner died, and the other community members were also looking after him. When Mejía asked the local guy if Vaguito needed a new home, he reassured her that the community had been taking good care of the dog. Mejía then realized that it would be unfair to take Vaguito with her as he would be losing the priceless memories of his late owner.

Sharing the dog's photo on her X (formerly Twitter) account, Mejía wrote, “This beautiful baby impacted me on the beach. A man told us that this is his home now … his owner was a fisherman who passed away a while ago. Since then, he stares at the sea every day, and gets excited every time he sees boats.” Thousands of people reacted with compassion and sympathy for the dog and his late owner. One X user, @leonrovi3, wrote in Spanish, "I hope the waves caress him on behalf of his owner!" Another person, @fcgarciaa8, commented, "My heart broke. The hope of that little dog to wait for his owner, I wish humans were as noble and loyal."

Mejía hasn't gone back to that beach since she met Vaguito, and she doesn't know how he is now. However, she does know that dogs and their human companions have a very strong connection. During an interview with The Epoch Times, she expressed her firm belief that a dog's love has no boundaries and she hopes that Vaguito's story will encourage others to value and give their pets the proper care that they deserve.
