Children are simple-minded creatures, and the slightest change may leave them concerned. But this little girl’s pure innocence when she saw her father without his beard melted hearts on the internet. Instagram user and mother Kristin Reid (@kristin_reid) shared her daughter’s hilarious reaction to her husband coming home post-shave. The rib-tickling snippet accurately depicts how naive kids are, and people love it. The video is one of the most popular videos by the creator, amassing over 3.7 million views on the platform.

In the beginning, the little girl hangs around the couch with her mom until she spots her father entering through the door. Suddenly, her face is painted with a look of immense shock and stress. With an intense stare, the toddler tries to recognize the person but in vain. “Who is that?” her mom quips from behind the camera. Then comes the whimpers and a plain rejection of her dad’s new look. She nodded her head in disbelief while her father stood in front of her with a clean-shaven face, wearing a smile. Disapproving of his act, the baby then started crying while aggressively nodding her head sideways. Their pet dog seemed happy, though.

The father walked up to her, which only made her crying more intense. With a flushed face, the girl buried her face into the couch before her father picked her up in his arms. She was not convinced by his show of love and turned towards her mother with her arms stretched out. Both parents giggled as their baby daughter cried in shock at the sight of the strange man. “When Dad shaves his bread, that’s all I’ve ever known,” the post was captioned. The video was a hit among fans, receiving over 127,704 likes and dozens of comments.

Turns out, many people related to the instance and shared their dilemma with it. “I understand, sweetie. I used to cry whenever my dad shaved his mustache!” wrote a person (@sweetslover313) while another (@phoenix_bennu_1111) recalled, “Right. Put that hair back on your face. My dad did this once. He was scolded.” “That’s how my daughters were when their dad cut his hair,” shared a fellow Instagram user (@fidelementbelle). Other comments mused on the antics of the baby and showered her with love and blessings. “She was like, 'oh stranger danger,'” joked @butterflygoddess_7, and @kildufftheresa suggested, “He should have taken her with him while he cut it.”

“Aww she doesn't know it's dad, he sounds the same but looks different so she thinks her dad has disappeared,” wrote @julietucker_3. “It’s the dilation of the pupils for me, she zones in so quick,” noted someone else (@tlicious83). However, one of them had a critical response to their parents’ having fun with the baby. “I don’t find it funny that you’re laughing at her fear. You should have picked her up and comforted her while telling her it’s daddy,” expressed @patty_q1611. “At least the dog recognised him,” mentioned @j.matthew868. According to Nemours Kids Health, toddlers feel separation anxiety. From about 10 months old to 2 years of age, they can recognize the faces and start to fear being apart from a parent, which is also due to a developing sense of self and a little understanding of the world.
