As the train arrived at the station at about 2:17 p.m., Brown, who was a passenger, produced a gun and announced the robbery, per the New York Post. Brown can be seen in the CCTV tape, sporting an all-black outfit consisting of a sweatshirt, slacks, a jacket, and white sneakers. He is seen walking away from the incident, leaving behind a train conductor who has their hands raised. He is a student at the Loyola University Chicago and was arrested as he turned himself in. According to CWB Chicago, Brown reportedly grabbed a total of $110 from the conductor. He apparently threw away his firearm after the event and went on to attend college.
The weapon was purportedly a BB gun, according to the testimony in court. During an interview with police, Brown allegedly stated that the weapon he exhibited during the robbery was a BB gun, which he claimed to have thrown away in an alley afterward. According to his defense counsel, he was hungry and wanted money to get some food before class. According to prosecutors, Brown told police that he spotted the conductor handling cash on the train and intended to rob him of the money. Brown's private defense counsel stated that he was only hungry and seeking something to eat.

As she considered the state's motion to hold Brown without bail, the defense asked Judge Maryam Ahmad to remember her days as a starving college student. This statement of the defense didn't sit well with the judge, leading her to state that while she was a hungry college student, she never imagined drawing a pistol on someone and stealing their money. She approved the state's plea for no bail. Brown's next court appearance is set for March 4.
