Mom justifies why she would not allow her kids to do sleepovers — but parents don't agree with her

Every decision in parenting comes with a deluge of layers that is far from black and white. When TikTok-famous mom Tara Huck (@t.c.huck) shared her bold take on why she does not allow sleepovers for her young children, she did not expect the internet’s heartbreaking reaction. In a viral video, the mother teased a few “unpopular parenting opinions” that sparked outrage over her parenting, particularly for not allowing her kids to do sleepovers at friends’ houses. Undeterred by the criticism, Huck stood her ground and explained the concern that comes with sleepovers.

A video posted in 2021 went viral with 1.2 million views, where Huck listed 3 uncommon parenting decisions she takes for her children. The first one stated, “I don’t allow sleepovers.” She followed it up with her opinion on screen time limitations. She apparently shows leniency on her kids’ screen time, provided schoolwork and other chores are done. Finally, if her kids do not like what she cooked and don’t eat, she leaves it that way. “They don’t eat,” an overlay text hinted. The post received a mix of reactions. According to Scoop Upworthy, the sheer hate for her opinion on “sleepovers” urged her to respond to the criticism with an explanation in a now-deleted clip.

Huck addressed the hate comments with valid points, stating that safety always comes first for her kids. She expressed shock over the “nasty messages” because of her personal decision for her kids. The mother pointed out that she does allow her children to visit friends’ houses and have fun. She only had qualms about them staying the night at another family’s home where she couldn’t be sure of her kids’ safety. "Even if you trust those people, they could have older siblings, sorry. Parents’ friends staying over, other people, there are a million other factors. There are too many other factors that I’m not willing to risk my children’s safety for them to have a sleepover," she said, per the source.
Besides, the mom insinuated that her decision is not set in stone, and it could change once her kids grow up or she trusts the friends’ family enough to let her kids sleep over. Meanwhile, the post with the “unpopular” opinions did receive a fair share of support and encouragement from viewers. @cablehunny shared, “Raised 5 beautiful daughters, no sleepovers! Nope and nope. They got to have a sleepover right after the wedding. Momma ain’t playing.” While @heyyy_its_aly wrote, “The world is a scary place now. You can’t trust a lot of people, and if she doesn’t feel comfortable letting her kids do that, then that’s her decision.”

However, a fellow viewer expressed a little disappointment over it. “To each their own. It’s just sad to me that nowadays kids can’t experience the sleepovers that we as kids did. It used to be a big, exciting part of,” noted @rotarychick23. In two more follow-up videos, Huck addressed a few other questions fellow parents and critics had for her stance against sleepovers.
