Last year we saw 214 instances of a gun being used or brandished on school premises, a scary number.

A school was always supposed to be a place where children could learn without having to fear for their lives. But, several parents are worried as school shootings continue to be a problem in the United States. Since parents can't simply stop sending their kids to school due to fears of a shooter, they're now preparing children for something they shouldn't have to deal with.

One of those parents is TikTok user @themcleodfam, who posted a heartbreaking video of her teaching her seven-year-old daughter to play dead in case of a shooting, and not respond in any circumstance. She asked her to relax her face and keep her breathing as light as possible as per Scoop Upworthy. "Dead people don't smile. Stop breathing so heavily. Don't move. Very light breathing," she said. It was tough for the kid to follow these instructions but she was trying her best.

She was even instructed not to respond to anyone who claimed to be the police. The mother tested her daughter Ella again by saying, "Police! Open up. Is anybody in there?" The seven-year-old was smart and didn’t move a muscle. While she understood why this was a necessary exercise, her mother couldn’t believe that kids have to be taught this just to be safe at school.

This sentiment was shared by the people in the comments section of her TikTok video. “As a Canadian mama.. my heart absolutely breaks for you.. I couldn't even imagine,” a user called Liv commented. “It’s awful that this needs to be taught but you’re doing a great job. this is the world we live in and you’re doing amazing as a mom,” another user called Caroline added. Given how things have been recently, it’s something maybe other parents should consider teaching their kids. It’s a matter of life and death after all.

This doesn’t feel real. Ella is 7. She’s in 2nd grade now. She’s still learning to read & has the tiniest little lisp 🥹 She loves playing mommy with her baby dolls, would rather be outside caring for her chickens, & still cries for me when she has a nightmare. This doesn’t feel real. ELLA IS 7. As a single mom you better believe I come packin’. You CAN support stricter gün regulations & laws AND be a gün owner. No parent should have to even think if discussing with the children what many of us are actively forced to practice with them. This doesn’t feel real. ELLA IS 7. SEVEN! I hate this so much 😭😭😭

One of the most harrowing stories of a school being shot up was reported on September 4, 2024, when two teachers and two students lost their lives. It took place in the Apalachee High School in Winder, Georgia. According to CBS News, it was the 214th incident of the year in which a firearm was used or brandished in a school.

The suspect was just a 14-year-old Colt Gray who was charged with murder. Authorities have said that he would be tried as an adult. His father isn’t out of the mud either. Colin Gray has been charged with four counts of involuntary manslaughter, two counts of second-degree murder, and eight counts of cruelty to children.

As per a report, Colin would spend the rest of his life in prison if he was convicted of all charges against him at the moment. He is facing allegations of "knowingly allowing his son to possess a weapon." Minors possessing handguns isn’t legal under Georgia law after all and there is no minimum age for the possession of a rifle or shotgun.
