AKRON, OHIO: A young woman is now standing trial for the alleged murder of her mother, whose final moments were reportedly heard by a person, who called her when she was fatally attacked.

Sydney Powell allegedly stabbed her mother, Brenda K Powell, numerous times in March 2020, which resulted in her death at Cleveland Clinic Akron General Hospital, The Mirror reported.

What happened in March 2020 incident?

The then-19-year-old Sydney allegedly first struck her 50-year-old mother using a cast-iron frying pan before taking out a steak knife to stab her repeatedly.

At the time, a Mount Union University staff member had reportedly called the Powells' home as Sydney was not attending classes. The person who called heard “yelling and screaming” and informed the cops.

When police arrived at the crime site, Sydney reportedly lied to them and told them a third person illegally entered their home and assaulted her mother.

‘Sydney Powell did take her mother’s life’

But Assistant Summit County Prosecutor Joe McAleese has asserted, “Sydney Powell did take her mother’s life and she knew in doing so her actions were wrong.”

The prosecutor also told the court that Sydney faced suspension from Mount Union University in 2019 for bad grades. But she did not tell her family about it.

McAleese explained, “The truth caught up to these lies. It became overwhelming. She was stressed. Her tuition was canceled. Her enrollment was canceled."

“In that moment, she struck her mother with a frying pan over and over. She stabbed her over and over — hoping that was finally enough. She had the awareness to try to hide what she did.”

But the alleged killer’s attorneys have defended her. The 23-year-old is reportedly facing murder, felonious assault, and tampering with evidence charges but has pled not guilty, claiming herself to be insane.

Sydney’s lawyer Don Malarcik reportedly stated, “She’s absolutely in shock — in a catatonic state — not responding to audio stimuli. The science is overwhelming — and it supports insanity.”

‘I don’t know why we’re doing this’

This comes after Brenda’s husband and the father of Sydney, Steve Powell, urged the court not to go forward with a trial.

During a pretrial hearing, he said, as per The Sun, “I don’t know why we’re doing this.”

“This isn’t what anyone wants here. I don’t know how she can handle it. I don’t know how I can handle it. I’m trying to keep my family together,” Steve added.
