People are terrified after chilling video shows what it was like to 'wake up on the Titanic in 1912'

Decades after the Titanic sank, the internet gets to experience the iconic wonder on social media. But it's not all that thrilling.

Most people would give anything to relive a time onboard the iconic British passenger ship, the Titanic, that sailed out into the Atlantic Ocean in 1912. The tragic fate of the largest and most luxurious ocean liner at the time, however, would be a hefty bargain. Fret not, as the popular TikTok channel, Time Traveller POV (@timetravellerpov) has just the right alternative to take virtual viewpoints to a whole new level. In their latest post, an AI video intrigued viewers with a POV character that wakes up decades in the past in an extravagant Titanic suite bedroom complete with eerie music. “POV: You wake up on the Titanic in 1912,” the video’s text declared.

The character wakes right up on the fateful day, hours before the ship is ripped apart by a giant iceberg, and his marvelous journey is cut short. The rather entertaining snippet shows a multitude of perspectives. He begins his day looking sharp in a tuxedo, relevant to the era, admiring himself in a mirror from a third-person perspective. Then, viewers finally get a glimpse of the glamorous corridors as the character walks rather strangely with his arms pointed in front. A brief sigh ensues as he holds up a cup of tea while gazing far away into the abyss. In contrast to the 2,240 passengers and crew that boarded the Titanic, per a report by The Reagan Library Education Blog, the ship in the video was conspicuously empty.

The oceanview scene then cuts into a ballroom event where the main character is seen dancing with an aristocratic lady. The pivotal staircase and chandelier can be seen in the backdrop as a crowd of people rejoice in the luxurious affair. It is followed by a fancy dinner scene where our POV tackles his food with not one, but three forks. Adding to the essence of being on the Titanic, the character caresses an intricately designed banister in the corridor before he spots a giant iceberg approaching the port side of the ship. Gasping at it with his fingers pointed at the giant lump of ice, another third-person perspective allows viewers to witness the crash.

In James Cameron’s version of the Titanic, the audience and characters were accommodated with sufficient time to accept the fateful impact. Quite reasonably so, as the ship was built as tall as a 10-story building. Whereas in the video, viewers are taken aback by instant damage as water gushes in aggressively drenching a crowd of well-dressed guests. People run chaotically while the first-class passengers flee to evacuate. The corridors and hallways are submerged in knee-deep water, deep enough for a shark to swim around the ship. In a spine-chilling moment, the character ducks his head inside the water and sees a shark approaching him.

The sinking deck is crowded with chaos but the famous Titanic band keeps performing having accepted their fate. Interestingly, a musician at the back is seen playing the bow like a trumpet with dramatic smoke emanating from behind. After some more shots of people fleeing and the expensive cutlery crashing on the floor, our POV character is seemingly done with the disaster and takes a plunge into the ocean. While the frigid Atlantic waters were enough to cause hypothermia and eventual death, we were saved by a boat. The character shivers and watches the Titanic sink with his hands, once again, pointing out needlessly while shrieks of people drowning engulf the scene.

The AI video was viewed over 3.4 million times and flooded with comments from netizens weirded out by the eerie shots. “Shark in the hallway and the double fork took me OUT,” said a person (@aka.neecee) while another (@mxrgclarke) quipped, “Why am I eating with 3 forks?” Yet, the rather inaccurate version of the Titanic’s fateful demise did not fail to capture the attention of millions of viewers.
