People can't believe the bizarre way Taylor Swift holds a pen: "It's unlike anything I’ve seen..."

Eagled-eyed Swifties are known to have no detail go amiss. One such thing that caught their attention was the way Taylor Swift holds a pen. In a still from Swift's 'Anti-Hero' music video that went viral, the popstar could be seen holding a pen between her index and middle finger. The unusual grip left fans baffled, prompting a flurry of reactions.
Digging up past pictures of Swift signing autographs, a netizen remarked, "Her unique pen grip always leaves me puzzled, it’s unlike anything I’ve ever seen." Meanwhile, a fan reasoned, "I taught high school for 45 years. This is much more common than you would think." Another echoed, "People who write a lot tend to hold pens that way because it is much easier on the wrist. I am a middle school ELA teacher, and that’s how I write because I write a ridiculous amount more than the average person." Chiming in, another penned, "I have to do this too! It’s an OT hack to relieve finger strain...Crazy, I saw this for the first time! We are pen twins."

On Reddit, folks explained the nitty-gritty of the grip, as well as its terminology. Dubbed the 'alternative tripod' or 'modified tripod,' the grip is a 'functional alternative' to the 'traditional tripod,' where the pen/pencil 'rests in the web space.' Cheryl Crow, an occupational therapist, explained, "This grasp that she uses, there are two main reasons people might use this, typically, one is that they are hypermobile, or their joints move too much. And the other one is hand pain, or rheumatoid arthritis, specifically.”

Crow theorized that while Swift probably doesn’t suffer from rheumatoid arthritis at her age, hypermobility is a real possibility. As reported by Slate, she noted, "This [grip] is most helpful in cases of hypermobility and low muscle tone...or similar conditions." The grip is also helpful for kids who write with excessive pressure, known as the 'Stenographer's grip.' Swift, who has revealed spending hours writing out her chart toppers and has to strum her guitar regularly may have adopted a different pen grip over time.

Whatever may be the reason, Swifties flooded the star with support. A fan remarked, "Nice! I know it’s popular with people who sign a lot of autographs too to prevent fatigue. Happy to see OT in the mainstream!" Other than the unusual grip, Swift also has double-jointed elbows. In an interview with Vogue, titled 71 Questions with Taylor Swift, the singer shared the detail when asked about her hidden talents. She said, "I am well aware that this is not a talent, but this is the only thing that I can do. I have double-jointed elbows, so...Yep. They are weird."
