Pink was told motherhood could hurt her career — but she says it’s the best choice she ever made
Pink is making it very clear that she doesn't regret having her children even though she was told it would end her career. In fact, she affirmed that having kids was the best decision she ever made. The mom of two — who shares son Jameson, 6, and daughter Willow Sage, 11, with husband Carey Hart opened up about how working in the music industry impacted her desire to have children.
"Everyone told me, 'If you have children right now, your career's over'," the 43-year-old told Zane Lowe for Apple Music. It was implied that there wasn't more to the singer than the sides she showed in her music.
"Obviously, we're all much more complex than any of that, but when I had a child, I think it softened me to the world, the part that didn't understand me," the So What singer explained. "And I think that's when my career began, really. I mean, I did a lot of stuff before that, but really, truly, I think it's when I started to really understand myself and understand the world and my place in it," she added.
Pink also reflected on her own complicated upbringing and how it affected her raising her kids. "Having a family was really important to me because my family life was screwed as a kid, and I'm super affectionate and cuddly and goofy. Just doing music wasn't enough for me," she admitted. "I was lonely. I was so lonely. It's a very lonely business." Even though she loves her career she never felt fully fulfilled. "I really wanted to have a family, and it was just as important to me as ambition because I didn't want it, if it's just ... if this is the carrot, I've eaten it. I'm still hungry. I'm hungry. I'm empty," she said.
She admitted she finds joy in not only writing music and performing but also in the time she spends with her kids. "Sitting with a guitar is one of my favorite things I'll ever do, but cuddling with my babies and taking them camping and being dirty for three days is also one of the coolest things I'll ever do, and making wine also happens to be pretty cool," she shared.
The singer also spoke to TODAY on February 21 saying she didn't want fame and fortune and that raising a family was what made her feel complete. “It felt like I’ve had a record deal since I was 16. And I was 30 and I wanted completion. And for me, that meant I wanted a family. I really wanted to have a family and people to walk through this world with. And for me, it’s not for everybody, but, for me, it’s easily the best decision I’ve ever made,” she said.
