After meeting with an accident that left her in a coma, Angela woke up not being able to recognize her own husband or even her grown children.
Five years ago, Angela Hartung met with an accident that left her in a coma. When she woke up, she had no recent memories of the people in her life. In fact, Angela woke up not being able to recognize her own husband or even her grown children.
It may sound like a story that came straight out of a movie scene, but this is the actual story of Angela. She was crossing an intersection in New York City when she was struck by a speeding car. The accident left her in a coma for nearly a month.
But more heartbreak followed that. Angela woke up from her coma only to realize that she had forgotten the last fifteen years of her life. Angela still thought that she was married to her first husband, even though he had passed on many years ago.
She even thought that her children were still young even though they were all grown up. But the biggest heartbreak came to her second husband, Jeff. Angella couldn't remember the previous fifteen years of her at all. "I just couldn't remember anything," recalled Angela to CBS News.
But all hope was not lost. Even though Angela thought that her spouse was no better than a stranger, Jeff had a plan. He started off by lining the walls of their home with photographs of the two of them: a reminder of their happy past lives together.
Then, Jeff courted his own wife to win her back. Despite the heartache that came from not being recognized by his own wife, Jeff stayed by Angela's side, slowly helping her bring together the missing pieces of her life. Though the move may have left a lot of people scratching their head in amazement, Jeff sees this as a blessing in disguise.
Jeff's steady and patient love seemed to have done the trick, Angela soon realized how much she loved it when Jeff helped her. Jeff and Angela decided to renew their vows, and they re-took the plunge in a sweet and short wedding ceremony at Central Park in New York City.
"I honestly believe that this happened for a reason," Jeff told CBS News. "How many times have we said, ‘I wish I could go back and do something over again?’ I’ve gotten to do that." Their wedding renewal was truly a Hollywood moment, and there wasn't a dry eye in sight.
