‘The circumstances are under investigation by LAPD’

The 54-year-old actor was found unresponsive inside a hot tub on October 28 at his home in Los Angeles.

He was subsequently confirmed dead by the authorities. Captain Adam Van Gerpen told The Mirror, “Los Angeles City Firefighters responded to the 18000 block of West Blue Sail Drive at 4:07 PM on October 28, 2023, to find an adult male unconscious in a stand-alone hot tub.”

He continued, “A bystander had brought the man's head above the water and gotten him to the edge, then Firefighters removed him from the water upon their arrival."

“A rapid medical assessment, sadly, revealed the man was deceased prior to first responder arrival. The circumstances are under investigation by LAPD and the LA County Medical Examiner,” Van Gerpen noted.

Taking to Instagram, the 59-year-old actor said, “Matthew was the first friend I made in Los Angeles when I moved there. I was 21, he was 16. We did a pilot together...we became really good friends and we were really more like brothers for a long time.”

‘The Birdcage’ star continued, “We drank a lot together, we laughed a lot together. We were there for each other in the early days of our career and he was to me, as funny as he was on Friends and he was and other things too, in person, he was just the funniest man ever.”

“A lot of us close to him really thought we lost him to drugs and alcohol a long time ago. As he documented in his book, in his autobiography, there was so much suffering,” Azaria added.
