'Stevie Wonder drove his car perfectly': Bernie Taupin reveals startling story about blind superstar
'How could I refuse? What was I going to do? Insult him and say: ‘No, thanks, I’ll walk?,'" Bernie Taupin said about Stevie Wonder giving him a ride

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Bernie Taupin has disclosed that Stevie Wonder, who is blind, used to drive a vehicle and once dropped him off at his studio.
Sharing the astonishing story, the 73-year-old English songwriter reportedly wrote in his upcoming book, ‘Scattershot: Life, Music, Elton And Me, by Bernie Taupi’, “One day Stevie Wonder turned up at the Caribou Ranch recording studio in Colorado, where we were making an album.”
A Daily Mail report citing the book, which will be released on September 12, also noted that Taupin “was surprised to see Stevie, who has been blind since he was a baby, out front sitting at the wheel of a jeep.”
Stevie Wonder ‘asked me if I wanted a ride to the studio’
‘The Whores Of Paris’ singer continued, “Bidding me a good morning, he asked me if I wanted a ride to the studio.”
Taupin noted, “Now the studio was only about 500 yards away, but it was still a daunting prospect. How could I refuse? What was I going to do? Insult him and say: ‘No, thanks, I’ll walk?’”
But to Taupin’s surprise, Wonder was a flawless driver.
He added, “Of course, he drove there perfectly, and looking back it’s obvious that this was his party piece. He’d had someone coach him several times, and being highly intuitive, his sensory perception honed to perfection, it was a trick quickly mastered.”
Bernie Taupin and Cher were never in a romantic relationship
Apart from this, Taupin has spilled many beans about his life through his book.
One such incident was when he thought he would go on a “date-date” with then-recently divorced Cher.
In his book, Taupin writes, “I got a call one day from publicist Gary Stromberg asking me if I wanted to have lunch with Cher. Whether this was intended as introductory in terms of a musical collaboration or a ‘date-date’ I don’t know.”
“Cher had recently separated from husband Sonny, so either one was possible,” he said.
However, Taupin cleared that his “relationship with Cher never amounted to anything romantic, even though we ran into each other continually over the next couple of years.”
