Teacher helps deliver baby after mom went into labor at school pick-up line: "The scary part..."

Life's beauty is in its surprises. At Kleberg Elementary School in Dallas, when a woman went into labor, a teacher stepped in to deliver her baby.

The school nurse Tylar Krause had called Loren Carcamo to pick up one of her two daughters at the school because she was sick. As she was standing in the school pickup line, Carcamo went into labor, per WXII 12.

“I’ve never delivered a baby. I watched one birth during nursing school,” Krause told TODAY on February 14. “So I was like, ‘OK, let me just try to remember what they did.’ I was panicking.”

Thereafter, Krause's office summoned fifth-grade bilingual teacher Maria Perez, who had delivered hundreds of babies as a doctor in obstetrics and gynecology in Venezuela. Perez moved to Dallas to become a teacher two years ago. She quickly realized Carcamo would not be able to reach the hospital in time, per NBCDFW. 

“I said ‘Don’t worry, I was a medical doctor in my country and I delivered a lot of babies',” Perez told TODAY. Carcamo said Perez was sure of what she was doing. “I feel like I was with a real friend, with my doctor. So, when she started talking to me, the scary part just went away,” Carcamo said. “She let us guide her through the delivery process,” said Perez.

"Mrs. Perez was holding my hand, helping with everything. It was so easy," said Carcamo. “I was smiling. I was happy. I couldn’t believe it. I just couldn’t believe it," the mom added.

“Everybody should experience that. It’s beautiful,” Perez said of the birth. “When the baby comes and starts crying, you just feel that amazing energy.”

Krause was amazed at how the events unfolded. “What are the odds of having a baby at a school in the first place? But having a doctor there that’s done it? We’re lucky. Blessed, I would say,” she said.

In January, Carcamo gladly returned to Kleberg Elementary School, along with her newborn, to reunite with Perez Caraballo and to click a picture together, reported NBCDFW. 

"I'm going to treasure this," Perez said. "I came to this country, and I studied a lot to become a teacher, so it was like I said goodbye to those days in medicine. It was really amazing. I feel really happy to have had one more experience in this science area that I worked a lot in," she added. 

According to NBCDFW, Principal Amy Zbylut also thanked Perez for her support. "Ms. Perez goes beyond her classroom to support campus-wide initiatives and the community," Zbylut said. "As our debate team sponsor, she trains our students in public speaking, grace under pressure, and critical thinking. She assists our campus with our diabetic students when the nurse is off campus, she assists with translating during parent meetings to create an inclusive environment and she participates in campus-wide community engagement events that strengthen school-community relationships," Zbylut added.
