This 11-year-old realizing that he’s going to be a big brother to twins is peak sibling moment

Siblings are every child’s first playmate and, in most cases, are the start of a lifelong friendship. An 11-year-old boy had been waiting to be a big brother for eight years. When the moment came, he could not resist his tears of joy as his mother showed him pictures of the baby. But, there was more to it. Mom Cayla Smeresky (@caylaleighbrown) shared a viral video with 1.9 million views on Instagram showing how her son reacted to the greatest surprise. After years of waiting, her son finally became obsessed with the ultrasound pictures of his younger siblings – plural.

Smeresky’s son got more than he had bargained for. When he finally received the news that the family was set to welcome not one, but two new members, the boy’s eyes welled up. A moment to cherish for the mom and the internet. As the video unraveled, the mom handed her son the ultrasound pictures for him to figure out what was going on. “Wait, so, what is the baby?” he quipped with a smile, anticipating his baby sibling's arrival. The mom then pointed at two spots in the pictures that indicate the baby. “What do you think that means?” Smeresky asked. 

The young boy gasped at the moment of realization and gleefully asked his mother, “We’re having twins!” He glitched for a while until his eyes welled up with tears. “Now you’re going to be really tortured,” the mom joked as she filmed her son’s wholesome reaction to the news. Meanwhile, her son fought back tears, trying to accept this beautiful milestone of finally becoming a big brother to two siblings. According to USA Today, Smeresky had been trying for a baby for years, but unfortunately, could not conceive due to infertility issues. “Our son finding out it’s twins after 8 years of trying to give him a sibling,” an overlay text read. 

People were touched by the boy’s heartwarming reaction and penned thoughtful comments, wishing love and happiness for the family. “The way his eyes instantly started watering, I knew he was going to be the best big brother in the entire world!” said @erindanielle1215, and @ebonyday1 said, “The luckiest babies to have him as a brother.” “He’s just precious. Such a sweet and gentle heart in this loving fellow. We should all be so lucky as to be surrounded by people like him…Your daughters are completely safe in this family,” penned @linda41258.

According to Psychology Today, the integral nature of a relationship with a sibling is often overlooked. Many do not realize how siblings affect every individual’s emotional and interpersonal well-being. Since siblings are often the first humans children interact with, it also fosters a space for learning and teaching valuable life skills and lessons that may be significant during adulthood. Over 80% of U.S. children grow up with a sibling, and their relationship is built on three crucial factors: everyday contact, emotional intensity, and the involuntary nature of the relationship– meaning siblings cannot end their bond like friendships do.
