This long-term shelter dog was finally excited to go home but his new family never showed up

During the pandemic, when people were forced to stay cooped up indoors, they turned to pets for some companionship. People took in dogs and cats and all sorts of animals for their own entertainment. It was all fine for a while until things slowly began to get back to normal and offices opened back up. The people who thoughtlessly took home pets are now dumping them at shelters because they can't take care of them.

A beautiful dog named Hendrix has been in the Kentucky Humane Society's shelter for over 10 months now after someone abandoned him—though it is unclear if someone had taken him in during the pandemic before abandoning him.

"Hendrix is our longest resident and has been with KHS since April of 2021; it's time for him to go home. We really don't get it! He is such an incredible guy! Does he snort like a pig and snore like a person with sleep apnea? Sure! Does he like to completely annihilate stuffy toys but insist on carrying their lifeless bodies around in his mouth like someone who regrets every single one of their life decisions? Maybe! But he's got the smile of a champion," a post by the shelter on Facebook read.

"Hendrix is a Chinese Shar-Pei/Staffordshire Bull Terrier mix and weighs 57 pounds but he's super stocky and low to the ground. He's 4 years and 8 months old and all we want is for him to be able to celebrate his 5th birthday surrounded by a family who will never leave him," they appealed.

Soon enough, a potential adopter showed up and agreed to take care of the cutie. Hendrix was ecstatic when they were scheduled to meet him on January 18th, 2022. Everyone thought he would be going home. But they never turned up.

They didn’t tell the staff why, which left Hendrix to wonder what he did wrong. The shelter posted a picture of the pup pouting after the emotional letdown.

“He was supposed to meet a potential family today, and he got all excited and dressed up… and they never showed,” the page shared. “All of us at the Kentucky Humane Society love Hendrix so much, and we just want him to have a great life with someone who will care about him as much as we do.”

As expected, people started hating the family for not keeping their word, but the kind people at the shelter requested them to stop making mean comments about the family.

"We want to thank everyone for their support of Hendrix but we ask that you please don't make hateful comments about the family who did not show. It was not our intention for them to receive the enormous backlash we are seeing in the comments, the purpose of the post is to help our longest resident find his forever home."

The shelter then asked for people to be kind to the family as "You never know what a family may be going through."
