Twins born just 15 minutes apart have different birth years for a really unusual reason
Fatima Madrigal and Robert Trujillo from Greenfield, California welcomed their twins around midnight. Though just 15 minutes part, it is unique that these twins were born on different dates, months, and years. Their son Alfredo was born at 11:45 PM on New Year's Eve. Their daughter, Aylin was born after midnight on New Year's Day.
Aylin weighed 5 pounds, 14 ounces at birth, while her brother Alfredo weighed 6 pounds, 1 ounce, at birth. Natividad Medical Center, where the twins were born, released a press release in which the new mother expressed her feelings about the rare occurrence, per PEOPLE. She says, "It's crazy to me that they are twins and have different birthdays. I was surprised and happy that she arrived at midnight."

The press release also added, "Aylin Yolanda Trujillo entered the world exactly at midnight on Sunday, Jan. 1, making her the first baby born at Natividad Medical Center and in Monterey County in 2022." The family doctor of the couple at the hospital, Dr. Ana Abril Arias, said, "This was definitely one of the most memorable deliveries of my career." She added, "It was an absolute pleasure to help these little ones arrive here safely in 2021 and 2022."
At midnight, Natividad welcomed Aylin Yolanda Trujillo as the area's first baby of 2022! Her twin, Alfredo Antonio Trujillo, was born 15 minutes earlier at 11:45 pm Friday, Dec. 31, meaning their birthday falls on a different day, month and year— a 1 in 2 million chance! pic.twitter.com/Lm5hkOpNBo

The fraternal twins join three elder siblings, two girls, and a boy, in the family. Madrigal said her eldest son was overjoyed to have a brother, and her family is eager to see them, reports USA Today.
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention states that every year, over 120,000 twins are born in the United States. According to the organization, these newborns account for little more than 3% of all births. According to the Natividad press release, twins with different birthdays are uncommon, with a one-in-two million possibility of twins being born in separate years. This occurrence is rare but this isn't the first time that twins are being born in different years.
According to MedStar Washington Hospital Center, a woman gave birth to twins at midnight, with one born in 2013 and the other in 2014, reports CBS Baltimore. They were born at 11:58 PM and 12:01 AM respectively, having a difference of only 3 minutes but a different year between them. Twins have been born in different centuries as well. Three sets of twins were born that were just a few minutes apart but in different centuries around midnight on New Year's Eve in 1999, per AP News.
