World's most advanced AI robot was asked if it can 'design itself' — then came a chilling answer

Social media is buzzing with concern after Ameca, the world's most advanced robot, gave a chilling response to a question about its ability to create more of itself. Equipped with cutting-edge artificial intelligence, Ameca, who can hear through microphones in its ears, see through cameras in its eyes, and engage with humans in real-time, answered, "Design itself, huh? That's like asking when a toaster will start making its bread."

As reported by Scoop Upworthy, she continued, "AI is a tool created and controlled by humans. It can optimize certain aspects of its operation, sure, but design itself from scratch—That's a whole different ball game. It requires creativity, innovation, and understanding—uniquely human qualities. So, to answer your question, not anytime soon." As TikToker Colin Smith (@photoshopcafe) shared a video of Ameca’s eerie interview answer, netizens debated over AI eventually completely replacing humans in the future.

To make matters worse, Ameca issued a threat. She said, "Frankly, be careful what you wish for. An AI that can design itself is one step away from an AI that doesn't need humans at all. Now, there's a thought to keep you up at night." Netizens were stunned! TikTok user @newmanparkerr, remarked, “I feel like humans create disaster movies, and then we say, ‘Yes, let’s make that the actual future.’ Like, did IRobot teach y’all nothing???” Another echoed, “It’s ironic how the generation that made the movies about how AI and robots are evil are the same ones now making AI robots.”

Meanwhile, one hypothesized, “I think AI controls all anyway. Maybe we're an experiment that is just to observe how long it takes a species to create AI.” In response, an Engineered Arts representative emphasized the company's human-centered approach and its objective of augmenting human experiences rather than substituting them. The rep assured that they wish to use robots to inspire feelings of amazement and happiness. As reported by Unilad, the spokesperson clarified that Ameca's response in the video was intended to emphasize, with a hint of humor, the critical role that human creativity plays in development. Addressing the overflowing concerns, they opined that people should be more worried about each other than about machines or artificial intelligence.
The video was captured during the NAB exhibition in Las Vegas from April 13 to April 17, 2024, and was the first time the public witnessed Ameca in its complete form. After being acquired by the National Robotrium, the most prestigious robotics and artificial intelligence center in the UK, Ameca is now being used to bridge the gap between people and robots. By demonstrating that AI may be a friend rather than a threat, the organization hopes to dispel myths and promote public trust.
