A Nebraska waiter was struggling to pay his college fees. Jason Derulo stepped in and changed his life.

Opinions about tipping vary from person to person. It is a common source of income for many restaurant servers, helping them to make up for their low compensation. Although it might seem just a small gesture, for someone else, this gesture could have an enormous impact. For Jordan Schaffer–who goes by @jordanschaffer2 on TikTok–it was nothing like a dream come true when he served singer-songwriter Jason Derulo. His hefty tip at a restaurant turned out to be a blessing for struggling Schaffer, who was trying to pay his college fees.

Derulo and his family visited Charleston's Restaurant, a bustling dining establishment in Omaha, Nebraska. The total cost of their 18-person group, including security, came at $795.99. However, Derulo had other ideas. He was so happy with the service that he left a tip that was almost thirty times that amount, which caught Schaffer completely off guard. Schaffer, stunned by the kindness, thanked the singer in a now-viral TikTok video, that garnered nearly 360k views. He revealed that the tip had just paid for his college fees.

The video opens with a voiceover saying, "Jason Derulo tipped me $5,000 at Charleston Restaurant in Omaha." The camera then pans to the waiter as he tells Derulo, "Wow, my heart's beating really fast." Derulo then said, "You guys are really awesome, man." The video then returns to Schaffer, where he sincerely thanks the pop star. He says, "Hey Jason, thank you. You just paid for a semester at my college." He continues, "I can't say thank you enough. I hope your family has a wonderful time in Omaha, and I hope you see us again." The video concludes with a close-up of the receipt and the waiter shaking his head in amazement. Derulo took to the comments and wrote, “You seem like a great person. Thank you for taking such great care of our family. Keep spreading the love bro.” 

He posted the video on his X account (@jasonderulo), where it quickly drew a flood of praise in the comments. @mm_goodchoices commented, "Just read this! I love that Jason made this guy's day! The waiter was so happy since tuition was due, and he didn't have the money to pay. We need more Jason's in the world….especially today!" @DebbyPoulsen11, wrote, "As a waitress myself back in the day, I know this young man will never forget this tip. In the 80's, I received a 1,000 tip and have never forgotten it. You have a Huge Heart!!!"

Similarly, @dnye6969, chimed in, "Mad props to you, Jason! I waited tables for 30 years of my life, I know what it’s like to get a big tip. Waiters and waitresses, as well as bartenders, live off their tips, thank you, hopefully, you started something, and it catches off, they deserve it!" Meanwhile, Derulo isn’t the only star known for leaving jaw-dropping tips. Celebrities like Donnie Wahlberg and Chrissy Teigen have also shown their generosity to restaurant staff on multiple occasions. Another, most memorable act of kindness came in 2018 when YouTube sensation MrBeast stunned a waitress in Greenville, North Carolina, by leaving an astonishing $10,000 tip, as reported by TODAY.
