AI has made a mark in almost every sector in the past couple of years following the rise of ChatGPT, and it continues to be integrated into different walks of life. But tech such as deepfake and deepvoice backed by AI has also created a situation where people can't distinguish between real and fake, ultimately making them vulnerable to scams. But, it is possible to spot the difference between AI images and real photographs of real people after close observation.

A TikTok page called @q_interviews carried out an experiment during which a picture of a blond-haired woman was displayed to young adults, who were then asked if it was real or AI-generated. The women seemed to pick up hints about the picture being AI-generated but the men had a completely polarized response to it. One man said that he thought there were "six fingers on the image but she wasn't showing anything." AI images are generally known for making mistakes while recreating hands in images, often adding extra fingers or removing some.

Looking at the deformed hands of an image is the best way to know if an image is AI or real. Another man felt that the woman's "expressions looked very genuine" whereas others focused on details like her skin tone and freckles. But the women were skeptical and while one of them straight away called it AI, another woman thought that the image looked "cartoony." "Her eyes, her ears, the color around her pupil, it looks like it's faked. The mouth also looks unreal," A third woman pointed out.

In the end, the TikTok creator revealed that it was an AI-generated picture indeed. The account has many other videos featuring interviews of random people on the street, who are asked to tell if an image is real or AI-generated. Most of the time the human eye failed to identify fake images. The comment section of this video which has over 8 million views was flooded with people sharing their personal opinion.

@user5109162699468 wrote, "It's scary that people cannot determine whether a picture is real or AI-generated." @bradderspotatoes commented, "It would either have to be AI or super edited, no way anyone can think it's an unaltered picture." @bored.game.geek shared, "Why is this picture so obviously AI and not a photoshopped regular picture? I guessed AI but Photoshop was on my mind." @sibyllehuckabee remarked, "It’s not physically possible for a lens to have an entire face in focus with that level of depth of field and blur in the background."

@idkman added, "It looks realistic but there's just something about it that's just unsettling my brain like the uncanny valley but I can't pinpoint what's causing it." @mexyourmomlol pointed out, "I just keep noticing that generated videos/pics have more vivid colors compared to reality and clearer." @cloudwolfieuwu chimed in saying, "I thought it was real. Impressive. Again, AI development can be super useful, but we need regulations to urge responsible use."
