Twins have a bond unlike any other, and their deep emotional and physical ties are often referred to as “twin telepathy.” While there’s no scientific evidence to back the concept, which is mostly a myth, a TikTok mom briefly showcased what it looks like. In a viral video, Eliana (@twinmomnautism) captured a sweet moment of her baby twins communicating from a distance while one of them sobbed dramatically, and it’s the most adorable thing on the internet. However, twin experts have chimed in with explanations on how and why twin telepathy may occur.

Eliana was cradling her baby, dramatically crying while tears struggled to pour out of her eyes. It was apparent that the infant was throwing a tantrum. Despite the mother’s efforts, she did not quiet down until she heard her twin sister whimpering at a distance. “My dramatic baby ‘crying’ until she hears her twin sister,” the mom of twins wrote in an overlay text. Suddenly, the baby cracks a smile, listening to her sister, and stops whining. “She smiles, knowing her sister is near,” the mom adds. Eliana believed that this interaction was part of the twin telepathy between the baby sisters. The post was viewed a whopping 15.2 million times and collected 1.8 million likes.

The comments were brimming with enthusiasm and humor. @zamirapatterson59 said, “Her twin told her to be quiet so she can speak too.” @luz.gmadrigal noted, “That twin telepathy is real! It happened to me all the time.” “I think babies don’t have tears until they’re like 3 months or something,” speculated @rayannestantos04. A fellow mom, @juzmel7, shared, “I have identical twins, and they were the exact same way. They have a relationship I will never understand.”

Nancy Segal, PhD, a psychology professor and leading expert in the psychology of twinhood, suggested that twin telepathy is more likely a myth than a reality. Many twins she had spoken to had never experienced any sort of telepathy, according to a report by Parents. “The problem I have with telepathy is that we hear about these matches after the fact, and so these stories get embellished,” said Dr. Segal. On a similar note, Tammy Schamuhn, a registered psychologist, explained that she has encountered anecdotal evidence suggesting a stronger physical and emotional connection between twins, which manifests in the form of synchronous experiences.

"Having a feeling of ‘something being wrong’ when their twin is in crisis, or simply being so in tune they seem to finish one another’s sentences, or finding themselves engaging in similar activities even though they are in different places,” said Schamuhn, who is also the co-founder of the Institute of Child Psychology. Nevertheless, these experiences have also been reported in non-twin siblings and close friends, which negates the concept of twin telepathy. While an abundance of evidence exists on twin telepathy, science has yet to "validate" the existence of this special connection between twin siblings
