Boy, 3, cannot speak clearly but sings 'Pocketful of Sunshine' like he’s been doing it forever

From childhood, babies and toddlers begin to show glimpses of their personalities. Be it a sassy eye roll or a bright smile, the little quirks insinuate at the charm these kids are going to bring to the world as adults someday. Similarly, Remi, a 3-year-old baby boy, stunned the internet with drumming and singing skills. The budding musician dropped the beats to the 2008 banger, ‘Pocketful of Sunshine’ by Natasha Bedingfield, while humming in perfect rhythm and pitch. Remi, who goes by @rockinremi on the TikTok page run by his mother, can barely speak full words but managed to grasp the rather complex musical notes.

Sitting on the floor, Remi drummed to the beats of the hit song, wearing a big smile on his face. It was astounding to watch as he picked up the rhythm, playing drums with a mere stick and a sandbox shovel, even waiting for the pauses. "Remi heard ‘Pocketful of Sunshine’ for the first time today. He’s already picked up the beat and the tune. He hasn’t stopped singing it," the mother wrote in an overlay text. The little rocker spoke fluent gibberish as lyrics, but the tune and beat were incredibly accurate. As his mother revealed, the sweet toddler naturally caught on to the music and has not stopped singing it ever since.

In the caption, she penned, “Can’t blame him, it stays in your head once you hear it.” The proud parent also shared that the song resonated with her son’s happy personality. “How fitting of a song for someone who is always happy and a ray of sunshine,” added the mom, even tagging the singer, Bedingfield, with the note. The post was unsurprisingly a hit among viewers as people applauded and cheered for Remi’s version of the song. The snippet received 3.3 million likes and thousands of comments about his musical talents.

One person (@riahgirl777) wrote, “The gibberish in perfect melody is killing me. I love smart babies.” While another (@mia.smead) joked, “Toured with him in ‘76, talented dude.” Someone else (@bananafack7) compared his exceptional talent with rock band Blink-182 drummer, Travis Barker. “This is absolutely amazing! The next Travis Barker! We need a video of this kid when you get him a drum set!” the comment cheered. “I think he might literally be a musical prodigy,” said @thedizzydora. In response to the outpouring of love, Remi’s mother shared that the kid did have his own drum set and “plenty of drumsticks,” adding, “When he’s outside or not around them, he gets creative and is constantly singing and drumming!” Child prodigy or not, Remi will surely be 'that' cool kid in class.

According to a 2021 study published in the journal Frontiers in Psychology that studied musical ability in infants, perceptual abilities rapidly develop in early childhood. Sensitivity to melodic contours and relative pitches takes shape in infancy, while culture-specific attunement happens over time. At 6 months of age, babies begin showing a general pattern of responding to musical rhythms. “Infants are also generally attracted to music and music-like stimuli (like infant-directed speech) from a very early age and give carefully matched expressive responses,” the study stated.
