Veganism is on the rise as more people have started to lean into the vegan food market and adopt a lifestyle that's argued to be more "considerate" of the environment. But when a vegan activist, who goes by Emptycages (@emptycages) on TikTok, invited people over to his wedding, a disheartening situation unfolded. In a viral snippet with 188,200 views, the man narrated his bizarre experience with the wedding guests refusing to eat at his wedding simply because the food was all vegan. The internet had thoughts about his claims and debated over whether the vegan couple should have informed the guests beforehand.

“People refused to eat at my wedding,” the creator, who claims to be a deer-hunter-turned-vegan, began. He and his wife, whom he refers to as Kaylee, are vegan activists and had been involved in street activism the night before their wedding day, too. Firm in their resolve to bring change and put an end to the exploitation of animals, the couple ensured their wedding menu was both vegan and delicious. “I’m not gonna support the rights violations of sentient beings at my wedding. So, I have all vegan food,” the activist said. However, he did not disclose to his guests that his food menu would be completely vegan.

“I know people get super weird about stuff as soon as they find out it’s vegan. Like, it could be the exact same plate of food, but once somebody finds out it’s vegan, they think about it differently. It’s really weird,” said the groom. Recalling his special day, he revealed that people somehow figured out that the menu was 100% vegan and had an off-putting reaction to it. As the tables were being set up for lunch, the couple was surprised to find that many of their guests were not interested in eating, or rather, even finding out what was on the menu to avoid the vegan dishes. “There are people who aren’t getting up to eat and come to find out they ate beforehand because they didn’t want to eat vegan food.”

The man expressed his shock and concerns about the guests’ addiction to “flesh,” so much so that they could not care less about vegan food at the wedding. Painting a grotesque description about the guests’ behavior, the vegan activist stressed, “you would rather pay for an animal to have it’s throat slit, to eat their flesh before a wedding instead of just eating free food.” Moreover, the couple realized people’s disinterest in vegan food and ensured their menu was loaded with delicious meals. Yet, their endeavor was a massive failure with the wedding guests. “We want meat-eaters to like vegan food,” the man added, criticizing those who prefer non-vegan food over mere vegetables like carrots, potatoes, and beans.

The post received 10,800 hearts and mixed reactions from viewers. Most supported the cause and sided with the vegan activist’s viewpoint, while a few others suggested he should have informed the guests beforehand. @theburrowpdx wrote, “My stepbrother refused to come to my wedding because my wedding cake was vegan.” While @chinese_work_ethic said, “I don’t get what people have against vegetables.” Someone (@cheryl_bru) contested, “Ok, but that’s you. Why put your thoughts on others? You be you, and let them be them.”
