Guy finds a massive $7.5 million hidden in a storage unit he bought for $500 — then, he got a call

Auctions are always a hotspot to find interesting artefacts, antiques, and sometimes worthy possessions. A bag full of cash is something everyone wishes they would find, but never do. This man, who bought a storage unit from American auctioneer and Storage Wars star Dan Dotson (@theauctionguydan) valued at $500, had no idea that he would turn into a millionaire moments later. In November 2018, Dotson narrated a bizarre instance where a man discovered $7.5 million worth of cash inside a safe packed in the storage unit from one of his auctions.

In a YouTube video, Dotson revealed that a woman came up to him to share a miraculous find by a man her husband worked for. “My husband works for a guy, and he bought a unit from you, and it had a safe in it,” he shared. Unable to open it, the man had called in some experts to unlock the safe and see what was inside. While it tested the limits of the first expert, a second person was finally able to open it. Taking a peek inside, the man and the experts were shocked to find a pile of cash sitting inside the safe. “Normally, it’s empty, but this time it wasn’t. It had 7.5 million cash inside the safe,” Dotson narrated, while the video cut to a few pictures of the storage unit.

The news traveled far and wide, and soon enough, reached the ears of the original owner who had apparently “lost the money and the goods.” The man received a call from an attorney representing the owners and negotiated for a return in exchange for $600,000. The man who bought the storage unit might have hesitated, which urged the owners to double it to a whopping $1.2 million. They finally reached an agreement at $1.5 million, and the man handed the rest of the money back to the owners. A great bargain.

Dotson and his wife, Laura, went on to speculate what the money was all about. They speculated it was likely dirty money since an amount of cash that high ought to sit at a bank counter rather than in a safe in a storage unit. The auctioneer couple theorized that they were most probably trying to hide it, and when the man stumbled upon it, they tried to negotiate a clean deal with him as a win-win. Popping in questions, Dotson and Laura asked their followers what they would do with the $1.2 million had they found it. “I wouldn’t ask any questions either. Personally, I think I would just probably weigh everything,” he said. While it was indeed a lot of money, Dotson said he would not be up for the drama, legal and illegal, that it would predispose him to.
Meanwhile, people shared their insights in the comments section. One person (@eenpaard3915) confessed, “I'd never open my mouth if I saw 7.5 million dollars,” while another (@coonus1) said, “Pay the lady! I’d have run for the hills and never looked back. They lost that locker fair and square.” However, the popular opinion was that most people would prefer to keep shut about the money found and not return any of it to the said owner. “Once the buyer paid for the unit, everything in that unit is property of the buyer, from trash to, in this case, 7.5 M. Buyer did not have to return any property,” wrote a commenter (@shanecreager433).
