Little girl tries to fix her dad's accent in peak Gen-Z moment: 'No paternity test needed...'

A dad and his daughter sat down to compare their accents, and people cannot get enough of their hilarious chatter. It is worth noting the exposure and diverse perspectives today’s generation of kids has, considering how interconnected the world is through social media and the internet. In a viral snippet with 10 million views, a Gen Z daughter adamantly corrected her father’s foreign accent while hysterically mimicking his expressions. People were quick to realize the similarities between the father-daughter duo and chimed in with sweet comments about their relationship. The clip was shared to a page dedicated to international parents & children, @beshopcourtz on Instagram.

Comparing their accents, the dad began with his version of the word “father” while the daughter copied him with exaggerated expressions. She mimicked his presumably Middle Eastern accent and swiftly corrected him with a Gen Z-coded American accent. “Or you can say dad for papa,” she quipped. Next word: “mother.” By now, the little girl was already exhausted by her father’s accent and tried to correct him once again. The father hesitantly blurted out the next word, which was “son.” He pronounced the syllables with a stress on the ‘O’ while the daughter, fed up, retorted to a subtle version of the word. Her father’s deep accent, even when saying “daughter,” barely impressed her.

The funny clip received 341,000 likes and several comments from viewers noting the resemblance between the father and daughter. One person (@mike_thelionheart_ryan) wrote, “This is hilarious. No paternity test needed. She’s a little version of her dad.” Another (@walter_wick2) chimed, “That’s your daughter, no doubt.” “Her face when she mimics her father,” laughed @richachetryofficial12. A viewer (@iswisftc) said, “Look in her eyes. She is tired of him and his accent.” “They are both tired of each other,” mused @olanma100.

The turn of the century brought in a new kind of jargon– the Gen Z language, which most millennial parents, or any other generation, fail to comprehend extensively. More so, there’s no end to this jargon as it has become an ever-evolving language in typically informal communication. However, employers have shared how Gen Z workers tend to bring in their modern jargon to the office as well. The daughter, though, did not really use Gen Z slang while schooling her father’s accent; she is more likely to do so with her peers. Internet culture, social media, and online communities have greatly influenced the speech and conversing styles of youngsters, and it is an avenue that does not typically resonate with millennials and former generations.

An accent, in its simplest form, is the way a person sounds when they talk. In the social sphere, an accent can be perceived as more than just sounds. It hints at the person’s background, from where they hail and reveals details about the subtler personal characteristics, such as social status, ethnicity, and even their first language, according to a report by HowStuffWorks. Patricia Kuhl, a speech professor at the University of Washington, has been exploring language in humans and its development for over two decades. She revealed how American English speakers, Japanese, and Chinese people have differentiated forms of speech for the same word, which also influences their comprehension and understanding.
