New Yorker baffled after realizing TV show was 'filmed in her own apartment' while she was watching it

One fine day, comedian Stephanie D’Agostini’s life crossed all levels of strange after she spotted her own apartment in a TV show she was bing-watching. The New York-based artist, also known as Stef Dag (@stefdagz), was flabbergasted upon the realization and collated the experience with a hit 1998 movie, in a viral video posted on her Instagram. The incident occurred when D’Agostini was catching up on a new episode of the Paramount+ reality show, Couples Therapy late last year. She happened to notice an odd resemblance of her apartment to the one she was seeing on-screen and was instantly taken aback.

“Why am I watching a TV show and realizing the people in the TV show live in my apartment unit?” the stand-up comedian quipped at the beginning of her video. As proof, she decided to capture footage of the reality show to precisely point out the unusual quirks that characterize her actual apartment, from the sticker on the electrical box to the positioning of the fridge and bathroom. “Do we see that electric box and that sticker? What?! I mean,” D’Agostini exhaled in shock. She even proceeded to showcase her bathroom and kitchen after seeing it on TV, both of which appeared dittoed.

The New Yorker made an interesting comparison, recalling the narrative of The Truman Show starring Jim Carrey. “Don’t tell me we don’t live in The Truman Show,” she said. Unable to make terms with the realization, D’Agostini insinuated the coincidence while hinting at the abundance of apartments in New York. “This is a glitch. It is actually a glitch happening in the matrix right now,” the comedian joked in conclusion. Whereas, in the caption, she called out to the reality show contestants, Nadine and Christine who probably had lived in the apartment unit before D’Agostini.

According to NYC.gov, there are more than 3 million housing units in New York City itself, as of 2023. Therefore, the odds of D’Agostini's apartment shown in the TV show are estimated to be really low, and yet, if it did happen so, it is a completely different level of strange coincidence. However, it appears that such occurrences are not so uncommon after all. One netizen (@robiams) narrated their version of the incident in the comments saying, “This happened to me in Toronto. I just moved in, and my friend was like, 'I think I’ve been here before,' and she pulled up an independent film she worked on like ten years prior, and it was fully my apartment.” the note read. While someone else (@nilesaway) claimed, “Similar happened to me with the show Mr Robot. The entrance to his apartment was the front of my apartment building.”

The rest of the internet was rather intrigued and resorted to jokes while some others explained with logic. "Imagine how the person who put that sticker there years ago feels…they’re like, 'Bro, my sticker is still there look!'" said a commentator (@devan.lutz), and a third person (@mumblezs) joked, “They film while you’re at work.” However, the common logic for many netizens was that apartment buildings have units that are carbon copies of one another. So the chances are high that the apartment in the TV show was in the same building rather than the same unit. Yet, the exact location of the stickers could not be explained.
