Golden Balls was a popular game show that captivated the British audience of the 2000s with its intriguing premise. It was centered around the concept of trust which meant that participants needed to have faith in each other to win money. In the last phase, the contestants had to choose whether they wanted to "split" or "steal." If both decide, to "split," each party involved got half of the accumulated prize, but if they picked "steal," no one got anything. The third option was that if one chose "steal" and the other one chose "split," the former would walk with all the prize money. Among several episodes on the gameshow, the one that is etched in the memory of viewers is the one between Nick and Ibrahim.

Nick and Ibrahim were placed in a situation known as "Prisoner's Dilemma," in which two individuals are put in separate prisons. The choices they had were that if one confessed, the other would go to prison for 10 years, and if both of them agreed to the crime, both would receive a five-year sentence. As per Psychology Today, this phenomenon is used by researchers to understand that if given a choice, would humans stick together or prioritize their self-interest. Mathematicians first put the theory forward, and since then has been used by experts to describe real-life situations.

Nick took a more aggressive approach to the situation. After being told by the host that the duo had to take 'the call,' they were given 30 seconds to discuss the whole thing amongst themselves. He blatantly informed Ibrahim that he was going to steal. He clearly said, “I’m going to pick the steal… I want you to split, and I promise I’ll split the money with you after the show.” Ibrahim was understandably stunned, there was this guy in front of him whom he had never met before this show, asking something so bizarre of him. Ibrahim tried his best to get the situation under control and suggested that both choose "split." But, Nick was adamant.

Ibrahim was in a desperate situation, he could either out of spite ruin it all for the duo or trust Nick's words. Ultimately, he chose to go with the latter. The host and audience were hooked, cheering both of them on. The moment of truth arrived, and Nick shocked everyone by choosing "split." Everyone had their hearts in their mouths after the big reveal and both participants left with 50% of the accumulated price. In a way, Nick found a loophole to the entire premise, just by his power of persuasion. Later on in an interview with Radiolab, Ibrahim revealed that this bizarre move helped Nick's cause in the game. Ibrahim went to the round absolutely certain that he would choose "steal," but it was Nick's adamant attitude and threat that he would walk away with nothing, that caused him to change his mind. Nick's move shocked people all over the country and became one of the most iconic moments to come out of the show.
