Ring cam captures sweet moment gay dad teaches curious toddler about pride: ‘I love rainbows’

Teaching kids important life lessons from a young age encourages them to understand the world around them better, respect differences, and make thoughtful decisions. These simple lessons also make them compassionate, informed, and responsible individuals. In one such touching moment captured on a ring camera, a gay dad is seen gently talking to his toddler, teaching him the meaning of Pride. This simple yet adorable moment was shared on TikTok by the gay couple Chad and Michael, who go by the username @doublethedadjokes.

The video captures a dad and his little son stepping outside their house to put up decorations for Pride Month. Initially, they talk about how hot the day is, but soon their conversation shifts to something more meaningful. The toddler asks his dad why he bought the rainbow decoration for the house. Responding to this, his dad says, "It's a decoration for this month, because this month is all about love and rainbows. [It is also about] being proud of who you are, and being proud of who daddy and papa are [referring to him and his partner]. A rainbow is a special way to show that."

The little boy carefully listens to this and proudly declares, "I love rainbows." While it seemed like a simple chat between father and son, it was a powerful lesson that the young boy is likely to remember for years to come. The rare moment tugged at the heartstrings of social media users, who praised the father for instilling great values in his young son that would shape him into a responsible adult. One TikTok user, @mex_nerf_herder, commented, “Your kid will forever remember this moment and cherish how much love and compassion were provided from the start. You guys are amazing. Thank you for sharing this moment.”

Another person, @fathernetics, wrote, “I love seeing amazing dads raising amazing human beings. Thank you. I know it’s not always easy, but thank you!” @sweetlee66, reflecting on her own experience, wrote, “This is how my girls were raised. They have a brother who is gay, who was in his 20s when they were born. They’ve never known anything else. They never thought that it was odd that their brother had a husband.” Meanwhile, Liz DeJesus, Chair of the Regional Director Council and Vice Chair of the PFLAG National Board of Directors, as well as a proud mother of a gay son, emphasized the importance of teaching children meaningful values early on.

She pointed out that children tend to absorb important life lessons from everything around them—what they see, what they hear, and how adults respond. As reported by Parents, she said, "When kids are open to the experience of Pride, they can shape their feelings and how they grow up, including their feelings about diversity and inclusion, and it carries through their whole life." In the longer run, this also helps to build an environment where LGBTQIA individuals feel safe in their true identity—where they’re not just accepted, but truly welcomed, supported, and celebrated.
