A routine grocery trip took an uneventful turn when a stranger couldn’t handle a toddler’s happy chatter, thereby prompting a mom to speak up and spark a parenting debate online. Karly, a 24-year-old stay-at-home mom from Greensboro, North Carolina, was filming a budget-friendly grocery haul for TikTok when her 18-month-old toddler, seated in the cart near her, began chattering away. What was meant to be an everyday errand quickly went viral after someone off-camera made a pointed remark stating,  “That baby needs a volume button.”

In response, Karly added a message to the video flashing on screen, “Just a reminder, you’re entitled to a child-free life, not a child-free world.” The clip, which was shared on her TikTok handle @karleymw, has since gotten over 2.3 million views and 188,000 likes. But more than just that, it has sparked a spirited conversation around public attitudes toward children and parenting.“ I was a little caught off guard,” Karly later told Newsweek. “My son wasn’t having a meltdown. He was just talking happily. He’s a baby. He doesn’t even understand volume yet.”

Karly said she had gently reminded her son to use his 'indoor voice,' though at his age, the concept is still beyond his grasp. “I tended to him several times,” she said, “but I was also just trying to finish checking out.” “There’s so much disdain for children just... existing,” she said. “I posted the clip because people seem to expect children to behave like small adults, and it’s exhausting.” A broad review shows that cities often design public spaces without kids in mind, squeezing out their natural behavior, including playful noise. When children are porous to noises or pressured to be quiet, they miss out on developmental interactions. Experts warn that when children are constantly told to be quiet or are treated as unwelcome in shared spaces, they miss out on critical social and emotional development that comes from interacting freely with their environment and others around them.

Karly shared that this was indeed the first time she’d personally experienced such negativity while out with her toddler, who was innocently babbling. “Most people are lovely,” she said. “But there’s always going to be that one person who forgets that kids are still learning. They're not perfect. They're people in progress.” The video has people from all sections expressing their opinions and has gone on to garner over 15,000 responses. While some criticized the mom, insisting children should be taught to stay quiet, many others defended her.

@karleymw mind you he’s literally 18 months and is causing you no harm at all. #motherhood #toddlermom #rudepeople ♬ original sound - karley

One commenter wrote, who goes by @Kathleen Becker “He’s not even being disruptive—he’s just existing.” Another @Maddie added, “His little voice is so cute!  People are miserable!" Similarly, another visibly irritated user who goes by @Madz wrote, "The way people act towards literal babies is insane. Babies are a part of society!" Defending why a baby's adorable babbling should be a problem, @hailey added, "I’ve heard way louder adults on FaceTime or on phone conversations with AirPods in grocery stores."
