Sweet rescue dog loses chance at forever home as family didn't adopt her for being 'too energetic'

Taking care of a dog is not an easy work. Unlike cats, they require attention almost all the time, and most of them have terrible separation anxiety. If you pair those issues up with a dog that has way too much energy, finding a home for them becomes a lot more challenging. That is the story of a Staffordshire terrier mix named Sky. She was brought to a local vet in Indianapolis on December 19, 2023, and was microchipped to Speedway Animal Rescue, as reported by Newsweek.

Sky was placed in a foster home while the organization tried to locate her original family. However, based on Sky's history, she had previously been found as a stray and reunited with her family a week later, back in 2016. Sadly, Sky's circumstances led to rescue's care again. At this point, she was not a pup but close to 10 years old. While an older dog being energetic is a sign that the animal is healthy, it can be hard to care for them.

A family did offer Sky a forever home, but it turned out that her energy was too much for them to handle. The reason behind this is the family already had a Great Dane who just could not adjust to the Staffordshire terrier mix's energy, causing problems for the family. So the dog had to be brought back to Speedway Animal Rescue. They wrote a post on Facebook about what had happened. "She was acting like a fool and was way too energetic for the senior dog in the house," the caption read. "We did not feel like it would be a good match. She was extremely excited to meet a new friend—a 160lb. Great Dane—and her energy was scaring him."

However, the rescue made it clear that Sky was still available for adoption and would make a great pet even if there was another dog in the house. "Sky is looking for a home where she can be spoiled with attention. She generally prefers human attention to dog attention but does enjoy playing with other dogs. She would do fine with other dogs or as the only dog in the home. She has not been tested with cats," the rescue team said, per the outlet. It was not easy to find a home for Sky, in October 2024, there was a positive update from the rescue regarding the terrier. It turns out that she had become a forever foster in SAR, much to everyone's joy at Speedway Animal Rescue.

This update, however, was followed by the unfortunate news of Sky's passing only two months later. Another Facebook update in December 2024 said that she had passed away after suffering from labored breathing and multiple metastatic tumors in her lungs. The heart-wrenching post also stated that Sky remained the beautiful, loving soul that she had been all her life, showing affection to those around her until she drew her final breath. "The suddenness of these situations is so hard for those who loved her, but we take comfort in knowing she was truly only sick for a short.Please keep her foster in your thoughts. Sky was a very special dog," the post read.
