What a man found out about notes left by a stranger in his house was nothing that he had expected
Getting messages from unknown accounts on social media raises concerns about stalking in the digital age, but imagine if you find notes inside your house and don't even know who's leaving them. Things get really creepy when such messages are found in different parts of the house when a person lives alone. This is alarming as it could be anything from the work of a potential stalker to just another crude joke. A Reddit user u/RBradbury1920 shared how they were in the middle of such a weird scenario when they started finding strange post-it notes in their apartment.
When the person first spotted the notes around their house in April, they were puzzled because it listed many chores that they do but nobody else was supposed to know about. At first, they thought they might have jotted those down while half asleep but they soon realized that it wasn't the case. "I scrawled it so it didn't appear to be my handwriting. On the 19th of April, I found another note on the back of my desk chair, in the same handwriting as the previous note, telling me to make sure I saved my documents. I was freaked out but there were no other signs of a break-in, so I set up a webcam in my house aimed at my desk and used a security-cam app for it to record after detecting movement," the post explained.
Things started getting a lot more spooky when the person found another note a few days later that read "our landlord isn't letting me talk to you but it's important we do." They recalled setting up the webcam and started browsing through the folders only to find out that there was nothing saved on the computer and the recycle bin was empty as well. The person was pretty confident that they did not clear the folders and suspected that someone might have noticed the webcam and deleted the footage files saved in their computer.
"On the 1st of May, I found another post-it note, this time on the outside of my door, with nothing written on it and there also appeared to be post-its on many other doors in my apartment complex, all blank, in varying colors. Do I have any legal recourse here? I have no proof except for the Post-its but those are written by my pen and on my Post-it notes, so conceivably I could have faked them," the person wondered. The person finally turned to the Reddit community for advice on what they needed to do in this peculiar situation.
"Would contacting the police get me into any trouble, if they can't determine an outside source for this? I just want to make sure I'm not wasting anyone's time. Should I consult my landlord? Those also living in the complex?" the post concluded. The user then added that they had pulled up a letter written by the landlord when they moved in. The troubled tenant found shocking similarities in the handwriting of the landlord and the ones on the Post-it notes.
The Reddit community started playing detective in this case and shared their thoughts on the situation. u/jaybestnz wondered, "WAIT - if the landlord note is in your handwriting, are you your landlord? When did you last meet your landlord?" A few others speculated that the person might be making the story up as it sounded like the plot of a movie or a novel. u/BanditoStrikesAgain suggested, "Get one of the door locks that can only be unlocked from the inside. If it's the landlord and he is using his key, then he won't be able to get in, at least through the front door."
Fortunately, the user behind the post shared a separate thread after solving the mystery and wrote, "Thanks to everyone who sent suggestions and advice on how to proceed– especially to those who recommended a CO detector because when I plugged one in in the bedroom, it read at 100ppm. I had CO poisoning and thought my landlord was stalking me," the update post read. The person further mentioned in a comment that they also checked into a hospital to get treated for carbon monoxide poisoning which was causing them to have memory impairment.
