Boy, 7, can't believe his parents have been 'married for 23 years' — then, he had more questions

A mother was caught off guard after her son shared his sudden realization about his parents. Kat Parker, who goes by @the.kat.parker on TikTok, secretly recorded her 7-year-old explaining his observations about his daddy’s relationship with his mother. The mom was flabbergasted to learn that their son was unaware of her marriage of 23 years with his dad. Even though he knew that his dad was his mother’s husband, the kid could not comprehend how they could be married until now. His innocent revelation lit up the internet after Parker posted it on TikTok, garnering 7.3 million views. 

Parker sat patiently, quietly recording the conversation, while her son articulated his thoughts about his parents’ romance. “Sometimes I see you guys kissing, I see you guys hugging…You and Daddy,” the boy began. Their constant display of affection urged him to come to the conclusion that his parents were married. “Now, I think you guys are married,” he continued. When her mother confirmed, her youngest son assured, “It’s okay if you say you are married.” Attuned to the dynamic between his parents, the kid was happy about it and even hummed a song about their marriage. 

His surprising epiphany about their relationship was not even the most adorable part. When the mother revealed that she and Daddy had been married for 23 years, he asked, “What? And you never broke apart?” An affirmative response encouraged him to think further down the past on how his parents came to be together. “When you are not married, did daddy just think that you’re pretty?” the son enquired. Eventually, Parker realized her son had a fair idea of how a marriage works, including dating and giving birth to babies. “We’ve been married for 23 years! He knew his dad was my husband but didn’t know we were married,” the post was captioned. 

Talking to PEOPLE, Parker revealed that she is a mother to three children. Her 23-year-old son is the oldest, followed by her 19-year-old daughter, and then the youngest, now viral 7-year-old. “We have a wedding photo on our mantel that has been there since 2019, we call each other husband, wife… So I was surprised, because I thought he knew, but then I realized, wait a minute, kids, they process life in their own timeline,” the mom admitted. She noted that the conversation fostered emotional intelligence in her child. 

The heartwarming conversation between the mother and son resonated with millions of people, gathering 1.1 million likes and many comments discussing the boy’s hilarious observation. “He thought y’all were living in sin this whole time,” wrote @khadijajamesjr while @blackqueenla related to the experience, saying, “My daughter used to tell me that her dad has a crush on me.”
