Comedian mocks boyfriend for delaying proposal — he returns years later with the ultimate comeback

Men in love will move mountains, and sometimes wait mountains too. Take this couple, nine years deep and still not engaged, until the boyfriend decided the best way to finally pop the question was on stage, right after a full-on roasting by a comedian for dilly-dallying despite being in a relationship for so long. And when he finally proposed, he let a stand-up comedian do the warming up. The story goes back to when Phil and Melissa attended comedian Akaash Singh’s (akaashsingh) show in Austin, six years into their relationship. They probably weren’t expecting to be publicly grilled, but once Phil admitted he hadn’t proposed yet, Singh didn’t hold back.

“What an idiot. I don’t see a ring,” Singh told him, in front of a packed crowd. Fast forward three years. The couple returns to the same show, now nine years in, and Singh immediately spots them. “You still haven’t proposed? That was three years ago. So we’re nine years in now.” Phil laughs, but Singh isn’t letting it go. “This is funny to you?” he asks, before calling them both on stage. Phil introduces himself and Melissa, “I’m Phil, this is Melissa,” and Singh jumps right in. “Tell Melissa and this audience the one possible reason you could have not to propose,” he says. Then, turning to Melissa, “And if it’s not good, they’re going to boo in support of you.” This could’ve gone downhill fast. But Phil came prepared.

“It’s not something I need to explain to you guys. It’s something I need to explain to Melissa,” he said, turning to her. “I’ve loved you since the day I met you. It took me nine years to become the man you deserve. And I want to spend the rest of my life with you.” Cue the crowd going wild as he pulls out a ring and gets down on one knee. The specific part was uploaded to Singh's Instagram.

Turns out, it was all planned and a setup by Phil and Singh, who were fully involved. In the full YouTube video, Singh reveals that Phil had messaged him months in advance to set the moment up.“We had Zoom calls about this. He was planning this for months,” Singh had said. Pretending to be surprised throughout the whole set? “I was on autopilot,” he joked. “I had to sit through the whole 45 minutes pretending I didn’t know it was going to happen.” Melissa later shared that she tried to get the ring beforehand, just so they wouldn’t be roasted again. But Phil refused. “Hell no, we’re waiting 10 years. There’s no way I’m not going to the decade. We’re so close,” he told her.
So, did he take too long? Depends on who is answering that question. But some research might be on Phil’s side, as a study from Emory University found that couples who date for at least three years before getting engaged are 50% less likely to divorce. Maybe he was just trying to be statistically responsible.
