She dreamed of a special proposal — but being asked at Disney World left her 'humiliated' instead

Marriage proposals often mirror the kind of relationship a couple shares. From funny pranks to extravagant romantic setups, it is what suits them best. However, there is a likely chance that the proposal may flop if one of them does not feel comfortable, lest “utterly humiliated” by the grand gesture. A woman narrated her “Disney Disaster” experience to the Daily Mail's advice columnist Jane Green after her boyfriend proposed to her in the middle of Disney World in Florida. While many would kill for a proposal like that, this woman was barely impressed and ended up rejecting him with a bland “No.” Ouch!

In an elaborate note, the unnamed woman sought professional advice on how to proceed with her boyfriend, whom she’d been dating for the past three years. She had figured that he might propose soon, but was clueless about his plans. “My boyfriend and I are both in our late 20s, and we've been together for more than three years. Over the past few months, I've had a feeling that he might propose soon, although I didn't know for certain,” the woman said. Now, the girlfriend did not fail to mention that she was not a big fan of theme parks. The couple had taken a trip to Florida to see his family and also celebrate his mother’s 60th birthday. While that went well, the last day of the trip was supposedly marked for something special.

The boyfriend insisted she accompany him to the Walt Disney Orlando Resort. Not quite thrilled about the idea, the woman tagged along nonetheless. She tried to make the most out of it, enjoying a few rides and munching on junk food. “I have to say, I found this bizarre. I am not a huge fan of theme parks and had no idea that he was either. But I went along with the excursion nonetheless and was happy to stroll around the resort, eat some junk food, and go on a few rides,” the woman narrated. After a fairly spent day, the couple stood in the shadow of Cinderella’s Castle. Then, she saw her boyfriend acting suspicious.

“He got down on one knee... and proposed!” Instead of jumping up in elation, the woman was left humiliated as people around started to cheer and clap for them. “Some were even taking pictures and videoing us,” she recalled. After all, her boyfriend had planned a dreamy Disney-themed proposal– not her forte. Acting on her impulse, the woman tried to drag her boyfriend off the floor. He did not take the hint. “I immediately tried to drag him up off the floor so we could flee from the public humiliation, but he joked that he wasn't budging until he got an answer. So…I said no,” she added. Disappointed, the couple then drove back home in complete silence, and it has been awkward ever since.

Hence, asking for advice, the woman admitted that she loved her boyfriend but was not impressed by his proposal. Her primary concern was that Disney World held no significance in their relationship. The fact that he chose to propose to her at a place that lacked meaning and history upset her. She was advised to forgive him since even lovers do make mistakes, and his intentions were pure. According to a study by travel research firm SuperBreak, about 1 in 4 women had turned down marriage proposals for trivial reasons, as per Cosmopolitan.
