Would you baby your adult children? One mom’s hot take is redefining traditional parenting

That mindset might go against what a lot of people are taught, that independence means total self-reliance.

At what point does parenting end? For many, especially Americans, the answer is when the kids turn 18, move out, or start earning their own paycheck. But one mom on TikTok is flipping that idea on its head, and giving a contradiction, and it’s striking a chord with thousands of parents, but at the same time, not sitting right with several of them.

In a candid video posted by @lottie.weaver, the mom of three daughters shares something she often tells her girls, she’s never clocking out of being their mom, not emotionally, not financially, not even when they’re grown.“One thing I always say to them is, Mommy will always take care of you,” she says, casually doing her makeup. “Dinner’s on me, shopping’s on me. I’ll fill your gas tank. I don’t care how old you are.”Her reason was simple, she says, “I brought you into this world. It’s my responsibility to be there for you forever.”

That mindset might go against what a lot of people are taught, that independence means total self-reliance, that needing help as an adult is a sign of failure. But for Lottie, providing for her kids was not intended at overstepping, but it was about caring for her own children. And she makes it clear this would apply no matter their gender: “I’d be the same if I had sons. I just happen to have daughters.” For her, parenting adult kids means things like casual Target runs, getting their nails done together, or grabbing dinner just because. It’s not about her daughters needing help, but about staying close and keeping that connection alive in everyday moments.

In the comments, thousands of people resonated with her approach. The comment section quickly turned into a culture check and reality check all at once. While @DelaynaRaen joked that her mom acts like she owes her for being born, others like @Luna and @marie<3 pointed out that what this mom is doing is actually standard parenting in many parts of the world, just not in the U.S., where independence is often equated with being left to fend for yourself after 18. @tatianalg94 couldn’t believe that some parents charge their kids rent, saying, “I’m too Latina to understand it,” while @4midableee went even further, saying parents who kick their kids out the moment they turn 18 must hate them.

On the flip side, @B_Robo said they support their kids when needed, but lifelong financial support isn't the goal; it’s about raising self-sufficient adults. @madelynrosexo added an important layer, saying she’ll always provide, but without guilt-tripping her kids, because having children was her choice, not theirs. And @Denise highlighted how culture plays a big role in this whole debate, explaining that in Hispanic families, kids often stay home until they’re married, and mutual support is just part of life.

For her, being a mom isn’t a phase that ends at 18, and for a lot of people, that kind of constant love is exactly what they needed to hear.
